StudySnap — Privacy Policy

StudySnap is a Chrome extension that helps students answer study and quiz questions using AI. This policy explains exactly what data we collect, how it flows, and what we never do.

1. How the extension works

When you click "Capture Question", StudySnap takes a screenshot of your active browser tab and sends it to our server (hosted on Vercel). Our server forwards the screenshot to OpenAI's API for AI analysis. The answer is returned to your browser and displayed on-screen. Screenshots are processed in real time and are not stored on our servers at any point.

2. What data we collect and store

Account information (stored in Supabase):

• Your Google account email address, display name, and profile photo — provided when you sign in with Google via Supabase Auth.
• A unique user ID assigned by Supabase.

Usage data (stored in Supabase):

• A daily count of how many captures you have used. This is used to enforce the free tier limit (5 captures/day) and reset it each day. No content of captures is stored — only the count.

Subscription status (stored in Supabase):

• Whether you have an active Pro subscription. Managed through Stripe. We store your subscription status and renewal date — not your payment details (those remain with Stripe).

Local device storage (stored in chrome.storage.local on your device only):

• Your authentication tokens (access token and refresh token from Supabase).
• Your answer history — a local log of questions and answers you have captured. This is never uploaded to our servers.

3. What we do NOT collect or store

• We do not store screenshots or any images you capture.
• We do not collect your browsing history or monitor which websites you visit.
• We do not access any tab other than the one you are actively viewing when you click Capture.
• We do not collect any data from pages you visit without using the extension.
• We do not sell, rent, or share your personal data with any third party for advertising or marketing purposes.

4. Third-party services

StudySnap relies on the following third-party services to operate:

• Supabase — Authentication and database hosting. Stores your account info, usage counts, and subscription status. Supabase Privacy Policy
• Vercel — Hosts our API server. Screenshots pass through Vercel transiently and are not stored. Vercel Privacy Policy
• OpenAI — Processes screenshots to generate answers. Screenshots are sent to OpenAI's API under their terms. OpenAI Privacy Policy
• Stripe — Handles payment processing for Pro subscriptions. We never see or store your credit card details. Stripe Privacy Policy
• Google — Used for sign-in via OAuth. We receive your name, email, and profile photo from Google. Google Privacy Policy

5. Chrome permissions explained

• activeTab: Captures a screenshot of the tab you are currently viewing — only when you explicitly click the extension button.
• scripting: Injects the answer overlay onto the page so the answer appears directly on screen.
• storage: Saves your authentication tokens and answer history locally on your device.
• identity: Enables the Google sign-in flow via Chrome's identity API.

6. Data retention

• Account data is retained for as long as your account is active.
• Daily usage counts are retained for up to 90 days for auditing purposes, then deleted.
• You can delete your local answer history at any time from inside the extension.
• To delete your account and all associated data, contact us at the email below.

7. Children's privacy

StudySnap is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us and we will delete it promptly.

8. Changes to this policy

We may update this privacy policy from time to time. We will update the "Last updated" date at the top of this page. Continued use of StudySnap after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
